Our Science

The exposome, which includes all environmental exposures (e.g., diet, pollution, stress) that influence health alongside genetics. Chronic exposure to harmful factors can increase disease risk, impacting metabolism, brain function, and overall well-being. Understanding and modifying the exposome through lifestyle changes can help mitigate these risks and improve health outcomes.

Dynamic Human Environmental Exposome Revealed by Longitudinal Personal Monitoring

Using a novel approach to systematically interrogate the human airborne exposome for biotics and abiotics, we tracked 15 different individuals spatiotemporally, with up to 890 days to provide an extensive personal profiling of the environmental exposome.

Precision environmental health monitoring by longitudinal exposome and multi-omics profiling

We found thousands of external chemical and biological exposures associated with the internal microbial, proteomic, and metabolic alterations within this individual, indicating a strong association between the external exposome and molecular health.

The Exposome in the Era of the Quantified Self

With the rise of wearable sensors and advanced biochemical analysis, individuals can now track their exposures in real-time, ushering in the era of the quantified self. We discuss how integrating exposomic data with genomics and health records could revolutionize disease prevention and personalized medicine.

Longitudinal profiling of the microbiome at four body sites reveals core stability and individualized dynamics during health and disease

We identify individual-specific and commonly shared bacterial taxa, with individualized taxa showing greater stability. Interestingly, microbiome dynamics correlate across body sites, suggesting systemic dynamics influenced by host-microbial-environment interactions.

Exposomics: a review of methodologies, applications, and future directions in molecular medicine

Exposomics is the emerging field of research to measure and study the totality of the exposome. This review provides an overview of the potential role of exposomics in molecular medicine, covering its history, methodologies, current research and applications, and future directions.
